Project Background

Hillsborough Castle has been a grand family home and is now the official home of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, and a royal residence. Members of the Royal Family stay at Hillsborough when visiting Northern Ireland.

Viewed by some as a politically neutral venue, Hillsborough has played an important role in the Peace Process in Northern Ireland since the 1980s.

In 2014, Historic Royal Palaces took over the running of Hillsborough Castle and Gardens and began an ambitious project to restore the house and gardens to its former glory.

The Problem

The gates and railings had been repainted numerous times. Upon thorough inspection, we discovered that multiple layers of paint had been applied directly over corrosion without sufficient preparation, leading to significant delamination. In response, our client requested a detailed specification for a coating system that would meticulously restore the gates to their pristine, original condition as when they were first installed.

Solution and Benefits

Collaborating closely with the contractor, we determined that the gates and railings should be removed and prepared to ISO 8501-1 Sa 2.5 standards. After reinstallation, the railings were meticulously hand-painted with Rust-Oleum 769 Damp Proof Primer, followed by two coats of Rust-Oleum Alkythane 7500. To complete the project, the tips of the railings were elegantly highlighted with Ardenbrite Metallic Gold paint, enhancing their aesthetic appeal.
